Not Getting Most Recent Headers

I'm trying to pull headers from alt.binaries.e-book.technical and I cannot get anything later than September 22nd. I've done the master reset, and verified through a third party (binsearch.info) that there are later articles.

I have Pro version 1.97 build 78

I have tried Starting with the Last, with Last new, setting the "after" date, and nothing pulls up headers after September 22.

Any ideas what else to try?

Steve

What server are you using?

When you click the More Headers button, check the box that says to set the Search range to the same value.

It's unlikely that this is the problem, but you could disable all the filter options on the Search Strings tab in the Settings.

The master reset doesn't delete the new cache yet. If you want to delete the group's cache manually, here's how:

Close your search session.

Find the cache folder in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Hochsw\BinaryBoy\1.00\CacheFolderT

It might look something like this: C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Local\Binary Boy\Cache\

Under that folder go to 2\SERVERADDRESS\al\

Delete the folder named alt.binaries.e-book.technical

I'm using Forteinc. I've pulled a nzb for more recent files, and can use that to download, so I don't think it's a problem with the server not having the files.
I Noticed when I first go to the newgroup, it does run through a few thousand found, then it reverts to found: 0.

* More Headers: Did this, no real difference.
* Deleted the directory: Still a problem
* Disabled all filter options: Still a problem
* I had a filter in this newsgroup, eliminated it: Still a problem.

So I have:
Filter: (blank)
Search: *
Start: Last Max 10000
More Headers: Last Max 10000 also use this range for the next search.

Anything else to try?

Steve

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15569 @

For More Headers, keep it at Last 50000 but try searching All with After checked and set to Oct 1, 2011.

Do other newsgroups stop in September as well?

BinaryBoy's reply to BinaryBoy #15570 @

Also... Can you take a look at that directory again? What's the highest numbered file there? (the .bbch files)

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15572 @

I'll play with the More Headers settings.

Other newsgroups pull more recent stuff.

Highest number in the directory is 11606 (C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Binary Boy\Cache\2\news60.forteinc.com\al\alt.binaries.e-book.technical\11606.bbch)

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15573 @

Ok, now I'm not seeing anything new pulled from the other lists either. I'll do some digging on my end and see what I can find.

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15574 @

File 11606 contains headers dated Oct 11th, 2011 so it appears to be receiving headers but not finding them during the search for some reason. Odd.

BinaryBoy's reply to BinaryBoy #15575 @

I created an account and I'm able to see recent headers. Is there anything on the Header Filter tab that might be blocking headers?

BinaryBoy's reply to BinaryBoy #15576 @

Do you happen to have multiple copies of Binary Boy on your computer? If one is older than build 76, it won't be able to read the days from the cache that build 77 or later downloaded.

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15577 @

I did install build 78 recently (last 2 weeks). I don't recall whether I uninstalled the previous version, but I know I'm only running build 78.

Re: Filters.
I do have a filter in the main screen set up: "warez|dutch|danish|Deutsch|french|german|spanish|swedish" but I've also tried removing that (setting to blank) and there was no difference. Within settings>header filter, nothing is checked. Within settings>search strings only the "Use AND as default operator" is checked, and the radio button is set to "Never".

I'll keep looking. Seeing the count increment, then show 0 found, made me think that BB was finding the headers, but I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't show them to me.

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15578 @

My list options are set to:
Send text articles to text.txt
Show only first part of files
Don't sort parts before queuing
Start from last group searched
Group List editor

Could it be the "Search: *" That always worked before, but this time the status stayed on "Searching..." for a long time?

Steve

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15579 @

You don't have to and shouldn't uninstall the previous version. The new version will overwrite it. My concern was that maybe you had a shared drive or something.

* shouldn't be a problem. I'm adding some extra logging to build 82 to help narrow down when the subjects disappear. If you want to run it, you can keep the log options off. It will write the information to log.txt anyway. http://www.binaryboy.com/patch.php The View Log command under the File menu will show the extra logging after a search.

You can email me the logging info if you want. support at binaryboy dot com

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15580 @

Which file do you want? The 11606.bbch file, or something else (and which folder should I check).

I assume I should turn on all logging for this.

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15581 @

The new build will write about 8 lines to the log even with logging off so you actually don't need logging on. More information might help but those 8 lines are what I'm focused on right now.

Do a search with the new build from http://www.binaryboy.com/patch.php Go to Binary Boy's File menu, click View Log. The last 8 lines will show some information about the search result totals. Copy/paste those into an email.

I hope this is what you're looking for:

08:01:53: CSearchSession: OnRefreshEnd() called
08:01:53: OnRefreshEnd(): Counts retrieved
08:01:53: OnRefreshEnd(): Closing handle
08:01:53: [664] CBBNNTP::CloseHandle(): Most empty packets: 0
08:01:53: search(): after(1): 11600, before(0): 11607
08:01:53: is_enough_memory: 1
08:01:53: search(): raw matches: 0
08:01:53: inflist count/results 0/0
08:01:53: after FindCompletes count/results 0/0
08:01:53: Search(params) added: 0
08:01:53: after Search(params) count/results 0/0
08:01:53: quit_now: 0

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15587 @

The search didn't match anything even before the header filters took effect. Try setting the After date back a little like maybe Oct 1.

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15588 @

Ok, here's the screen:

I hit the right ">" button and get nothing. Last few lines of the log are:

08:59:03 OnExitInstance(): END
08:59:03 WinMain: Destroying critical section object.
08:59:03 WinMain: Returning.
08:59:03 ------- Binary Boy has closed successfully. ------

09:37:40: search(): after(0): 11607, before(0): 11607
09:37:40: is_enough_memory: 1
09:37:40: search(): raw matches: 0
09:37:40: inflist count/results 0/0
09:37:40: after FindCompletes count/results 0/0
09:37:40: Search(params) added: 0
09:37:40: after Search(params) count/results 0/0
09:37:40: quit_now: 0
09:41:22: search(): after(1): 11596, before(0): 11607
09:41:22: is_enough_memory: 1
09:41:22: search(): raw matches: 0
09:41:22: inflist count/results 0/0
09:41:22: after FindCompletes count/results 0/0
09:41:22: Search(params) added: 0
09:41:22: after Search(params) count/results 0/0
09:41:22: quit_now: 0

So now I hit the "More headers" button with a Starting Point of "All" and "Also use this range for the next search" checked.

I still get 0 found, and the last few log entries are:

08:59:03 OnExitInstance(): END
08:59:03 WinMain: Destroying critical section object.
08:59:03 WinMain: Returning.
08:59:03 ------- Binary Boy has closed successfully. ------

09:37:40: search(): after(0): 11607, before(0): 11607

09:37:40: search(): raw matches: 0
09:37:40: inflist count/results 0/0
09:37:40: after FindCompletes count/results 0/0
09:37:40: Search(params) added: 0
09:37:40: after Search(params) count/results 0/0
09:37:40: quit_now: 0
09:41:22: search(): after(1): 11596, before(0): 11607
09:41:22: is_enough_memory: 1

09:41:22: after FindCompletes count/results 0/0
09:41:22: Search(params) added: 0
09:41:22: after Search(params) count/results 0/0
09:41:22: quit_now: 0
09:44:21: search(): after(1): 11596, before(0): 11596
09:44:21: is_enough_memory: 1
09:44:21: search(): raw matches: 0
09:44:21: inflist count/results 0/0
09:44:21: after FindCompletes count/results 0/0
09:44:21: Search(params) added: 0
09:44:21: after Search(params) count/results 0/0
09:44:21: quit_now: 0

I agree that it doesn't appear to be bringing anything down, but I can't figure out what I have set to make that happen

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15589 @

According to the latest emails, results are coming up so the search thread no longer writes to the log file unless logging is enabled. http://www.binaryboy.com/patch.php

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15727 @

I'm not sure what changed -- this was working great for a few months, but hasn't been working recently (since some time in January). I haven't had time to come here and post.

No changes (that I know of) to my setup. If I go to binsearch.info I can browse the newsgroup, and nzb files download just fine. I'm running build 84.

I've done a master reset -- what else should I try?

Steve

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15728 @

Can you send a new log to support @ binaryboy,com ? Run from the Start button and type: binboy.exe -log

Right after you see the problem, click File | View Log. If you copy/paste the last couple dozen lines or so it might show what's happening.

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15729 @

Done

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15730 @

Got it.

It looks like you've received the latest available headers from the server but either Binary Boy isn't searching beyond about 100 days ago OR it's not storing them OR they've been deleted somehow OR the server has messed up its list of headers. I'm still looking into this. In the meantime, do you happen to have the "Before" option checked? Try unchecking both the Before and After options.

(Oops. Never mind about the before/after checkboxes. I see they're logged as unchecked.)

BinaryBoy's reply to BinaryBoy #15731 @

There's a definite problem and a potential problem. The definite problem is that the forte server (and its easynews backend) does not have headers newer than Dec 2011 in that particular newsgroup (even though it may have the actual articles). I confirmed this by manually logging in and requesting the latest available header and it was dated Dec 2011. Only easynews or forte will be able to fix that.

The other potential problem is the email address you have in one of your filters that looks similar to this: Yenc@power-post.org(name)
Parentheses are special characters so Binary Boy will see that as two separate words separated by the default OR or AND. In other words, Binary Boy will interpret it like this:

Yenc@power-post.org OR (name)

That could match a lot of headers. To avoid this, put the whole address in quotes: "Yenc@power-post.org(name)"

sdavies2720's reply to BinaryBoy #15732 @

Thanks. I'll correct the filter, and see what I can do to wake forte/easynews up... binsearch.info shows newer headers, so there's been activity.

BinaryBoy's reply to sdavies2720 #15733 @

Yes, the BinaryBoy.com servers also show activity right up to today.

Here's the email I got back a few days ago:

Nice catch. There's something wrong with the group. Using Agent and
logging I can see where the problem is, and I've asked one of our engineers
to confirm. Once he does I'll pass this back to our underlying provider. So
it may take a little while to get this fixed, but it's definitely a "bug"
in the APN newsgroup.

I'll keep your message active and get back to you when I hear more. Thanks
for the heads up on this.

Nice one. At least that would give some confirmation to users.
