I'm not sure when this started, or if it's always been the case, but when I search newsgroups, the status bar (in the lower left-hand corner) doesn't update to show which newsgroup it's searching, until it finds a match.

That's the download progress/speed. It doesn't update unless you're downloading. The other info is just extra. The dropdown list below the search area shows the newsgroup.
